The selected candidate will work in the context of the PRIN project ARTIS.
Brief description of the project
Among artificial physical senses, devices for standard vision and audition
have reached human-level abilities, whereas touch is still lagging behind.
Nevertheless, touch is fundamental in order to allow intelligent agents to
physically interact in the real world. The present limitations in the
engineering of artificial touch are mainly due to the complex nature of the
sense itself: it implies physical contact, thus requiring the artefact to
be soft and conformable while at the same time meeting demanding
metrological standards with transducer spatial density and extension,
temporal sampling and sensitivity.
However, promising solutions based on optical fibers are emerging for
tactile sensing, such as the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) technology, which is
sensitive to physical stimuli such as temperature and strain. One of the
most outstanding features of FBGs is the possibility to inscribe multiple
discrete gratings within a single optical fiber, each with its own
characteristic wavelength. Thus, the FBG technology can contribute
addressing unmet wiring issues to enable high-density meshes of sensors
integrated in modular large-area skins. The tactile features derived from
FBGs should be enhanced with further information on visual material
attributes, thus mimicking and extending human multimodal sensing ability.
To this aim, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) represents an innovative solution
to inform the machine on the material composition with a non-destructive
approach. HSI captures in an image the material reflectance within the
visible and non-visible spectral range, thus enabling objective
characterization of different materials. Grounding on these enabling
technologies, the ARTIS project will deliver modular robotic effectors
endowed with FBG-based touch sense complemented with HSI for
non-destructive biomaterial characterization, and a haptic console with
wearable tactile displays allowing kinaesthetic and cutaneous telepresence.
