Antonio Bicchi

Dear Antonio,
I am running for the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS)
Administrative Committee (AdCom) in the upcoming elections. I would
greatly appreciate your support!
As you might know, I have volunteered in several critical IEEE RAS
activities, which made me fully aware of this society’s strengths and
weaknesses. I have listed my thoughts below in bullet point format
(obviously these are in addition to the usual AdCom responsibilities and
tasks, which I avoid to re-state here):
* The IEEE RAS can benefit from ‘lean thinking’, as a transformational
framework to understand how to seek dynamic gains rather than static
efficiencies. Rather than reviewing the overall society goals and
preparing AdCom reports according to a standard format, I would set
priorities year on year and strengthen each aspect one at a time.
* Often, when making important decisions (e.g., whether to eliminate
conference papers), we focus solely on productivity. However, I
would like to emphasize the importance of fostering a sense of
belonging through RAS initiatives, which is just as critical as
metrics that enhance a CV.
* We are at a very critical point in terms of conferences and events
organization. In my opinion, we should take a step back and see how
the two worlds of online and in-person conferences can be joined to
create even better experiences in the future. This period gives us
the best opportunity to create it!
* I will work hard towards sustaining and strengthening our society’s
meritocratic and performance-driven culture. I think, in part, it
will be the governing members’ duty to identify the talents and
reflect their opinions in decision making processes.
* IEEE RAS conferences are increasing in number. We need to make sure
that this growth rate corresponds to the RAS population growth to
ensure quality. If the former overtakes the latter, RAS
publications’ quality and credibility will be at risk. This needs a
thorough analysis that should be done by RAS governing bodies.
I sincerely thank you for considering and hopefully promoting my
candidacy. Please also see my short bio below.
Warm regards,
Arash
