Two-years Post-doc position (assegno di ricerca)
on Software Architectures for Self-adaptive autonomous robots
at the Laboratory of Software Engineering for Robotics,
University of Bergamo, Italy
This call is a preliminary stage aimed at collecting Expressions of
interest.
The formal opening of the position is expected in December 2023
and will only be open for 30 days.

At the Laboratory of Software Engineering for Robotics of the University of
Bergamo
we want to explore new approaches for enabling Configurability and
Adaptability of
autonomous mobile robots. These are key Systems Abilities of Service
Robots, which
concern the reconfiguration of the robot software architecture during
missions execution
without service disruption.
In particular, we want to address the following research challenges:
- How to formally model software and hardware variability of a robotic
system.
- How to formally model the user-perceived quality of service (QoS) of
robotic
tasks and behaviours (e.g. performance, robustness, accuracy, safety).
- How to exploit these software models to reconfigure a robotic system at
runtime
when the operational conditions change (e.g. faulty devices, poor ambient
lighting,
task uncertainty).
This research topic has been addressed in recent publications:
- D, Brugali, et al., "Software variability in service robotics".
Empirical Software Engineering 28(1): 24 (2023)
- D. Brugali, "Modeling variability in self-adapting robotic systems''.
Robotics and Autonomous Systems. 167: (2023)
The successful candidate is expected to have
- a background in robotics or software engineering,
- some experiences in software development for robotics,
- a recent PhD degree in Computer Science, Software engineering, or
Robotics,
- a good publication record,
- proficiency in English and good communication skills, both written and
verbal
The working language will be English, knowledge of Italian is not required.
The contract is for 2 years.
